Ferguson

15687793830_3748cab676_zI hope most people see where I’m going with this before being quick to dismiss what I’m trying to get across. Last Monday, a grand jury found that Darren Wilson should not be criminally charged for the shooting of Michael Brown. Understandably, the town of Ferguson, and much of the Internet, exploded with rage. You might agree that most of the public’s opinion, maybe even your own, is summarized pretty well by this tweet from @VancouverGuero: “So what we’ve all learned last night. It’s everyone else’s fault EXCEPT the police officer with the gun? Wow.” I think this is a …

ECE Soccer wins closely contested game over MSE

304624_246664392042814_1149778705_n6November 10, 2014 ECEs quick spurt of goals wins them a closely contested game over MSE. The game started with both teams bringing their best defensive effort as neither team was able to break through and score a goal in the first half. Both teams came out firing though, as a multitude of shots hitting the post and the crossbar signalled that perhaps the defensive coverages were solved. It did not take too long for MSE to score however, as they drew first blood, 1-0. And then ECE stepped on the pedal, scoring 4 goals in just 3 minutes.  It …

Chem Basketball breezes through MSE; stays undefeated

304624_246664392042814_1149778705_n6Chem basketball extended its winning streak to a league high 7 games, as they handily beat MSE with a score of 42-20. Chem came out firing from the gate as it started the game with a 14-2 run, headlined by their pressure defense forcing several turnovers from MSE. This led to plenty of fastbreak opportunities as MSE stayed on their heels. By putting their regular starting point guard, Patrick Polvorosa, at center, Chem emphasized speed and transition opportunities over MSEs lineup that featured plenty of bigs. MSE never recovered as the first half finished with a score of 22-8. The …

Five Reasons Why Chelsea Will Win The Premier League This Year

chelsea article title photo  Chelsea looks like the team to beat at the start of the Barclays Premier League. Let’s look at why they are poised to win the title in May 2015.   Reason #1: Defence Chelsea’s defence is the best in the league. With John Terry’s consistency and leadership at the back, the Blues cannot seem to put a wrong foot down. They are not the fastest of defenders, but the central defence partnership of Terry and Cahill offer stability and their communication with Courtois between the sticks is close to perfect. Mourinho has also put his faith in the young …

Fun ways to stay active in Skule

aIn the middle of midterms, it’s easy for engineering students to get tunnel vision. The world outside of that Stewart Calculus textbook seems to disappear and all that makes sense is debugging code or performing row operations. You’ve heard people talking about joining varsity or intramural sports teams to help them get exercise and have a bit of fun. It sounds like a good idea, until you remember the pile of problem sets, other clubs you’re involved in, and that thin shred of a social-life you’ve somehow managed to hang onto. Sports may seem like a bit much for most …

Toronto Raptors Season Preview

raptors-could-make-playoffsWe The North in its second season of renaissance. Last year, the Toronto Raptors season changed for the better after the Rudy Gay trade. The trade gave them a competent bench and a new identity. Gone are the times when the team would just alternate isolation possessions for Rudy Gay and Demar DeRozan. The team decided that instead of tanking and trying to get enough ping pong balls for Andrew Wiggins, they would collectively play great system defense, share the ball and use their new found depth in order to win games. They had the best record in the Eastern …

Chem Basketball pulls away late in victory over Mech

304624_246664392042814_1149778705_n6October 17, 2014 A game of runs ends with Chem squeezing out a victory in the final few minutes over Mech, winning 41-33. The game started out quickly with Chem scoring 10 straight points in the first 3 minutes, highlighted by multiple fastbreak opportunities and solid defense by their starting backcourt duo of Tenzin Sherab and Patrick Polvorosa. Mech started a run of their own however, closing the gap to 10-8 with an increased focus on defense and preventing turnovers. The teams traded baskets and both defenses weren’t on point as the high scoring first half finished with Chem leading …

Toronto Mayoral Candidates

20101025-voteOlivia Chow Olivia Chow loves Toronto; most people in the Trinity-Spadina riding are all too happy to tell you just how much. In all honestly, she really does seem to care about Toronto and what happens to the people who live here. The problem is that caring doesn’t guarantee that she will make a good mayor for this city. Before campaigning started in earnest, Olivia seemed like a shoo-in to replace our dear Mr. Rob Ford. A 29-year veteran of politics and the late, great Jack Layton’s number one favourite person, it seemed fairly indisputable that she would hold a …

Much Ado About Homework

IMG_20141014_215127After The Cannon’s Rabab Haider made this post about the best way to tackle note-taking, I felt a piece on homework only seemed appropriate. Many of you are just beginning to settle into the new environment life has thrown you into; adjusting to new surroundings, making new friends, and learning a lot. But as fun as these weeks have been, midterms start in just two weeks, so there’s work that needs to be done. Spending my first year in EngSci, I observed the strategic and oddly breathtaking efficiency of my classmates as they seemed to study work that would take me 5-6 hours in …

Student Profile: Jeremy Wang

10656377_10152757500429736_1602006363_nJeremy Wang is a second year Engineering Science student looking to pursue the Aerospace Engineering option. What was your strategy for success in first year? I wasn’t too concerned about academics in first year just because it was so early on. So the emphasis for first year was kind of understanding where boundaries lie, and pushing what I was capable of to know where those boundaries rested. It’s easier to put more effort into academics than it is to put more effort into extracurriculars when you know that you have very high grades and you want to maintain that. So …
